Back in the day, when musicianship was still valued by the music industry, and music buyers were more than a hormonal mob of too-cool-for-school teens bent on out-streeting their suburban brethren, any respectable record collection had more than a few instrumental records in it. These LPs were perfect for dusting off the hi-balls and martini glasses, mixing up a batch of cocktails and swapping lies about your visit to the Playboy Mansion. Above all, this music was fun. And it’s that spirit of fun that is captured on three amazing albums, Steel Guitar Heart Attack, Steel Guitar Rodeo.and Steel Guitar Air Show. Jon Rauhouse can play and he wants to bring back the glory and the artistry of the instrumental LP with this collection of pedal steel and Hawaiian guitar gems. With various guest appearances, he brings in some voices that enrich his music and show his versatility.His playing has been a fundamental part of recent recordings by Neko Case, Kelly Hogan, Sally Timms, Giant Sand, the Waco Brothers and Calexico, and his mix of technical mastery and swashbuckle and swoon (not to mention his unmistakable hunched-over madman demeanor) make him a widely recognized sideman.
Jon Rauhouse’s music shows us all that you don’t need words, you just need a good rhythm while you’ve got the gin in the shaker.
