TARWATER

Emerging in the wake of the so-called Trip-Hop explosion, TARWATER started out piecing together songs from looped beats, otherworldly samples, hypnotic basslines and Ronald Lippok's robotic, intoned vocal delivery. Darker than their contemporaries - Portishead, Massive Attack - their music was lent a Teutonic air by the band's German background, and an intriguing abstract quality by their backgrounds in electronica. TARWATER have developed and refined their style slowly but effectively, and The Needle Was Travelling, their sixth album, sees the band embrace more traditional songwriting structures and instrumentation into their work.

At the heart of every TARWATER song lies a fundamental dependence upon grooves, no doubt a product of Berndt Jenstram's fascination with potent bass lines and Ronald Lippok's work in To Rococo Rot, for whom he also drums. It is this rhythmic sense that propels these pulsating songs, enabling Lippok's narrative to draw the listener in even further to their fascinating, atmospheric and evocative world.

TARWATER's music has already been used for movies, theatre performances, fashion shows and commercials.
